My wife got me hooked on the TV show, Criminal Minds in which members of the FBI are able to figure out why criminals do what they do. Based on the FBI's ability to know the intentions and motivations of the criminals, they are able to pick up on important clues to help them solve the case.Last Sunday, our lectionary text from Hebrews 4 states, "Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thought and intentions of the heart."
As we open ourselves to the reading, proclamation, and study of the scriptures, we are inviting God to help us know what our true thoughts and intentions are. When we know why we do what we do thanks to the Holy Spirit who reveals these things to us, we are better able to live more authentically as followers of Jesus Christ.
It can be scary to face who we really are, but only when we do so, are we able to be the people God created us to be.
