Sunday (April 20/Easter Sunday) Pastoral Prayer

April 20, 2025 (Easter Sunday)
Beulah UMC & Oak Grove UMC

Risen Christ, this day just never gets old, even for those of us who have been attending Easter worship services all our lives. We continue to be amazed that on that first Easter, you pulled off what no one has ever been able to do, to be the first person to be resurrected from the dead.

Sure, we have heard stories of people coming back to life after having been pronounced dead, but this was different. You not only came back from the dead, but you were also resurrected with a new body, one that would never ever see death again. Even though we can’t fully explain how you were able to do this, you invite us to believe anyway and like Mary, all you ask is that we go and tell others about this good news.

But why should we wait until after the service? We will offer this good news now in this time of prayer as we lift up to you people on our hearts and minds who are in need of your healing, guiding, and comforting presence. We pray for those on our prayer list as well as others who we lift up to you silently. [PAUSE]

And yes, we also pray for ourselves to not allow our doubts and fears to rob us of the surprising good news that your tomb is empty. And just as it may be extremely difficult to explain how this can be, remind us that it is equally difficult to explain it away as if it really didn’t happen. Help us to stand in awe and amazement of the holy mystery that this day of Easter represents.

As your Easter people, we join now in praying these words that you taught us to say together knowing that you can do far more than we can ever think, ask or imagine…

=

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
