Sunday (June 8/Pentecost) Pastoral Prayer

Sunday, June 8, 2025 (Pentecost)
Beulah UMC & Oak Grove UMC

O God, on this Day of Pentecost, this day of Holy Spirit fire, like our hymn writer just expressed, “Take the dimness of our souls away.”

Descend upon our hearts and fill us anew with the heat of your Holy Spirit fire, even hotter than a humid day in August. May this preacher be granted even more hot air than I already use on a Sunday morning so that my sermons will always be fiery. And may the heat of your love increase so much in each of our hearts that those around us will be drawn to your fire.

Spirit of God, descend upon our hearts this day and during this time of prayer as we lift up to you those on our prayer list as well as others who are on our hearts and minds this day. And as verse 4 of our prayer hymn will soon remind us, teach us the patience of when our prayers seem like they are going unanswered.

And as we offer this prayer, remind us that it is your Holy Spirit that intercedes for us and prompts us to become even more alert to your moment-by-moment presence in our lives. We know that it is only by your grace that we can become more aware of your life-giving power.

We also lift up to you our Bishop, Leonard Fairley as he presides over the South Carolina Annual Conference this week. Teach us to love thee as thine angels love, one holy passion filling all our frame; the kindling of the heaven descended Dove, our hearts an altar, and thy love the flame.

We pray this in the name of Jesus who taught us to pray together…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
